Robben Island (“Seal Island” in Dutch), was first discovered by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. Many years thereafter it was used by the Portuguese, British and Dutch sailors as an outpost and resting location.
In 1997 they decided to change Robben Island into an Museum and in 1999 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Island have become an extremely important symbol of South Africa, and a very big tourist attraction.
